The Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests, circa 1420, is supported by 28 pillars made from single tree trunks. By 1889, there were no trees left in China tall enough to replace them.

This 1992 telecommunications tower is Beijing's tallest structure, but the observation deck offers limited visibility on smoggy days. A helpful tourist exhibit provides photographs of what the view would be on a clear day.
5 | National Grand Theatre | 41-50 | 350,000 | 250,000 | - | 4
The reflection of the structure's dome is meant to suggest a pearl or the rising sun.
6 | White Pagoda | 51-60 | 380,000 | 290,000 | - | 4
A symbol of cultural exchange between China ad Nepal, this tower is modeled on ancient Tibetan burial mounds meant to suggest the shape of the Buddha seated on a lion throne.
7 | Yonghegong Lama Temple | 61-70 | 400,000 | 320,000 | - | 10
This Tibetan structure houses a 59ft Buddha of the Future, carved in 1750 from a single piece of sandalwood. The structure extends another 26 feet underground for stability -- helpful considering the nearby subway!
8 | Forbidden City | 71-80 | 430,000 | 380,000 | - | 6
There are 9,999 rooms in this medieval palace complex, including the Imperial Bridal Chamber - charmingly located in the Palace of Earthly Tranquility.
9 | Jianlou Tower | 81-90 | 450,000 | 420,000 | 300,000 | 4
The original 1429 Arrow Tower of Qianmen burned down in 1900. During restoration in 1915, a German architect added white decorative eyebrows to the arrow holes in the hopes it would look more Gothic.
10 | Water Cube | 91-100 | |||||
Water attractions here include a panoramic production of Swan Lake, infusing ballet with synchronised swimming, diving, kung fu, and acrobatics.
11 | Beijing National Stadium | 101-110 | 500,000 | 500,000 | 420,000 | 2
It took groundbreaking precision engineering to ensure that this 91,000-seat Olympic Avenue's twisted steel "Bird's Nest" roof would evoke the random crackling in glazed Chinese pottery.
12 | Badaling: Great Wall of China | 111-120 | 530,000 | 600,000 | 600,000 | -
The first length of Great Wall to be restored was relatively well-preserved due to the Ming Dynasty advancements in brick-making technology, namely the use of sticky rice as a binding material. |
