One of the largest and busiest markets in Tanzania, the Kariakoo Market occupies several blocks, including a former barracks once occupied by the British Carrier Corps. In fact, the word "kariakoo" itself derives from the phrase "Carrier Corps."

One of the oldest buildings in the city, Old Boma was built by a former sultan of Zanzibar in 1866, but today houses the Dar es Salaam Centre for Architectural Heritage, a non-profit that aims to preserve historical architecture throughout eastern Africa.

In 1946, the site was used to celebrate Aga Khan III's Diamond Jubilee. During the celebration, he was weighed against a pile of diamonds using a giant scale, which tipped at 243lbs of diamonds!

Built in 2013 and named for the former President of Tanzania, the center is a perfect place to combine business and pleasure in Dar es Salaam, with convenient access to a range of international cuisine and exotic tours!

The museum originally opened in 1940 as a museum dedicated to King George V. It was expanded in 1963, and although it's now dedicated to the history of Tanzania, its collection still includes one of his cars.

Ikulu is the Tanzanian State House, serving as the president's official residence and office. The majestic complex also contains gifts from several state visitors, including a shield and spears from the former Ethiopian Emperor, Haile Selassie.

This strikingly beautiful, red-roofed church was built in a Bavarian style by German missionaries in 1898 and is still in use today. In fact, lucky visitors can sometimes hear the choir practicing from the street outside!

Though it's sometimes referred to as a lighthouse, the Maritime Control Tower has been used to guide maritime traffic in and out of Dar es Salaam safely and punctually since its construction in 2007.
