The Istanbul Archaeology Museums - the Archaeological Museum, Museum of the Ancient Orient, and Museum of Islamic Art - house objects representing almost every historical era. No word on how soon museum fatigue kicks in.
2 Topkapi Palace 11-20 1,620,000 1,400,000 1,000,000 30
Istanbul Stamp02
The palace might be the jewel of Istanbul, but the real jewel is the palace display of the 86-carat pear-shaped Spoonmaker Diamond - one of the largest diamonds in the world.
3 Hagia Sophia 21-30 2,100,000 1,500,000 1,500,000 35
Istanbul Stamp03
If you're feeling a little worn, it might help to visit this prominent museum. The ancient building is definitely older than you are: It's been standing for more than 1400 years.
4 Blue Mosque 31-40 1,900,000 2,200,000 1,600,000 25
Istanbul Stamp04
Legend has it that Sultan Ahmet was so anxious for his mosque to be completed; he helped to build it. He might have known something. He died within a year of completion, at the tender age of 27.
5 Chora Church 41-50 1,660,000 1,800,000 1,500,000 40
Istanbul Stamp05
This lovely example of a Byzantine church features remarkable mosaics, including Joseph's dream and his journey, the Nativity, the Flight into Egypt, the Mother mourning her children, and - oddly enough - Enrollment for Taxation.
6 Grand Bazaar 51-60 2,180,000 1,900,000 1,800,000 25
Istanbul Stamp06
If you're feeling lonely, a visit to Istanbul's Grand Bazaar might be in order. The 61 streets and nearly 3,000 shops attract 250,000 to 400,000 visitors daily.
7 Suleymaniye Mosque 61-70 1,960,000 1,800,000 1,900,000 30
Istanbul Stamp07
The mosque, built by Süleyman the Magnificent, was indicative of his magnificently charitable mind set. He specified that his mosque have such public services as a soup kitchen and a hospital.
8 Rustem Pasha Mosque 71-80 1,620,000 2,160,000 2,800,000 35
Istanbul Stamp08
You could say that visitors to this mosque end up feeling a little blue. The site is justifiably famous for a monumental array of ocean blue iznik tiles.
9 Galata Tower 81-90 2,170,000 2,660,000 1,950,000 25
Istanbul Stamp09
In 1632, Hezarfen Ahmet Çelebi, an early aviator, was said to have flown two miles on homemade wings from Galata Tower. Although physically impossible, the tall tale aroused so much fear in Sultan Murad IV; he exiled the poor aviator to Algeria.
10 Rumelihisari 91-100 2,670,000 2,650,000 2,140,000 35
Istanbul Stamp10
The famous fortress was once called Boğazkesen Castle, or the "Throat Cutter." This is less bloodthirsty than it sounds. It refers to cutting the straits - or the "throat" - of the Bosphorus, not people.
11 Beylerbeyi Palace 101-110 1,800,000 2,680,000 2,650,000 30
Istanbul Stamp11
When the Empress Eugénie of France visited the palace enroute to the opening of the Suez Canal in 1869, she was so enchanted by it she duplicated her guest room window for the Tuileries in Paris.
12 Maiden's Tower 111-120 2,670,000 2,460,000 2,170,000 25
Istanbul Stamp12
Legend has it that an emperor built the tower to protect his beloved daughter after an oracle prophesied that she would be killed by a snake on her 18th birthday. On that day, the emperor brought her a basket of fruit to celebrate her escape from death. Unfortunately, a small snake hiding in the basket bit the young princess - and she died just as predicted.

Trivia[]

  • Istanbul is, so far, the only city in Gummy Drop! to straddle two continents; Europe and Asia.
  • Most of Istanbul's monuments lay on the Western, European side of the Bosphorus Strait, with the exceptions of Beylerbeyi Palace and Maiden's Tower, which are located on the Eastern, Asian side of the strait.
  • The teapot souvenir also appears in Down the Rabbit Hole.
  • The background music also appears in Amman.
