Monuments[]
# | Monument | Levels | Requirement | Image | |||
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Bricks | Hats | Gems | Green Gems | ||||
1 | Maamagili Fishing Village | 1-10 | |||||
Fishing in the Maldives is a fascinating blend of he old and new. While dhoni boats are now motorized, many fishermen still don't use GPS or other modern devices to find schools of tuna. Instead, they depend upon sea birds to lead them right to the fish a method as ancient as celestial navigation. | |||||||
2 | Marine Drive | 11-20 | |||||
Marine Drive is the longest road in Malé, which isn't really saying much for a place only 1 square mile from tip to tip. This doesn't stop the island's love of motorcycles, however. Riding back and forth along the drive is a favorite activity. | |||||||
3 | Whale Submarine Dock | 21-30 | |||||
The largest tourist submarine in the world allows lucky visitors to view a colorful display of coral, reef fish and the hometown favorite - a rare, 6 foot long giant grouper that swims out to greet the submarine. No word on whether the grouper has romantic feelings for the sub. | |||||||
4 | National Museum | 31-40 | |||||
Among the many exhibits are the minutes from the world's only underwater cabinet meeting. The admittedly 2009 publicity stunt was meant to highlight the threat of global warming to the island nation. Cabinet members all donned scuba gear, with communication limited to white boards and hand signals. | |||||||
5 | Muliaage Palace | 41-50 | |||||
The palace has been the presidential home since President Mohammed Amin Didi in 1953. The gorgeous estate has been graced by such esteemed visitors as Queen Elizabeth II and Gandhi. | |||||||
6 | Ibrahim Nasir Airport | 51-60 | |||||
The Maldives government enlisted the citizens of Malé in a unique competition to build a new asphalt airport runway. The contest pitted four Malé districts against each other for aprize of 1,000 rufiyaa to the fastest district. 108 citizens volunteered, and the new runway opened in 1966. No tributes were injured in this contest. | |||||||
7 | Malé Fish Market | 61-70 | |||||
The fish market is a favoured place to see dozens of happy sting rays. Much like dogs sitting for treats, the sting rays swim around the market site waiting for unsold fish to be tossed back into the sea. | |||||||
8 | Grand Friday Mosque | 71-80 | |||||
The beautiful old mosque was built upon an ancient temple. Unfortunately, the temple faced the setting sun in the west, not the direction of Mecca. The result is that worshippers mus face the corner when they pray, and make certain they note the correctly laid carpet for directional guidance. | |||||||
9 | Sultan Park | 81-90 | |||||
The park is the home of the oldest tree on the Maldives. Local legend has it that if you make a wish and then say the magic word near the tree, your wish will come true! Unfortunately, no one has ever revealed the magic word. | |||||||
10 | Rasmee Dhandu Stadium | 91-100 | |||||
The newly named National Football Stadium holds nearly 13,000 spectators - or roughly the number of residents of the island where it stands. | |||||||
11 | Hulhumale Island | 101-110 | |||||
Don't be misled by the "hand-crafted" tag often given to Hulhumale Island. While the island is indeed man-made, it was not so much shaped by human hands as reclaimed. It was developed in 2004, when the government decided it needed new land mass to meet a growing tourist and native population. | |||||||
12 | Thoddoo Island | 111-120 | |||||
Looking for the ultimate getaway? Thoddoo Island is so remote; it takes nearly an hour and a half to get to it from Malé. You'll be able to enjoy some delicious tropical refreshment when you arrive, however - it is also the largest producer of watermelon o the Maldives. |
