Monuments[]
# | Monument | Levels | Requirement | Image | |||
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Bricks | Hats | Gems | Green Gems | ||||
1 | Coconut Palace | 1-10 | |||||
The builders of the 1978 landmark might have gone a little "nuts." The mansion not only features a massive coconut-shell chandelier, but also a dining table composed of tiny bits of inlaid coconut shells. | |||||||
2 | Arch of the Centuries | 11-20 | |||||
Every freshman student at Santo Thomas University must pass under this arch, also known as the "Welcoming Path of Thomas." No word on if anyone has ever attributed a failing grade to skipping the ritual, as opposed to skipping class. | |||||||
3 | Ocampo Pagoda | 21-30 | |||||
Legend has it that the Pagoda's quirky owner, Jose Mariano Okampo, enjoyed making ghostly, haunted noises from a tower to scare away visitors. No word on if it actually worked. | |||||||
4 | Malacanang Palace | 31-40 | |||||
The presidential palace is open to international visitors, but it takes some leg work. You'll have to book 10 days in advance, along with full contact info, the number of people in your party, and photocopies of all passports. In other words, it's a lot like trying to arrange a private tour of the White House. | |||||||
5 | The Golden Mosque | 41-50 | |||||
The Golden Mosque was built in 1976 as a welcome gift for the late Libyan leader Muammar al-Gaddafi. The nice gesture was for naught, however. He never made it to his scheduled visit. | |||||||
6 | University of Santo Tomas | 51-60 | |||||
The university is renowned as both the oldest college in Asia, and the largest Catholic school in the world. It is also the only school to be honored by four visits by three different popes - not that anyone is keeping count or anything. | |||||||
7 | Fort Santiago | 61-70 | |||||
The monument honoring famed freedom fighter Jose Rizal is the most heavily guarded public place in the Philippines - watched 24 hours a day by the corporals and sergeants of the Philippine Marine Corps' Marine Security and Escort Group. | |||||||
8 | Palacio del Gobernador | 71-80 | |||||
Once felled by an 1863 earthquake, the government building was rebuilt according to the plan of Imelda Marcos, Governor of Metro Manila and Minister of Human Settlements. Unsurprisingly, her elaborate plans included 12 stories, way beyond the area's three story limit. Due to public disapproval, the final building boasts a modest eight stories. | |||||||
9 | The Manila Metropolitan Theatre | 81-90 | |||||
The famed art deco theater, built in 1931, was recently slated to be renovated after years of neglect. It's enjoyed a wide audience so far, however, as it has been used for nearly every imaginable purpose - from ice cream parlor to boxing arena. | |||||||
10 | Manila Cathedral | 91-100 | |||||
The current cathedral was built on the spot of the first 16th century cathedral, which was rebuilt no less than six times. It was made mostly out of bamboo and nipa, which has the downside of being highly flammable. This was confirmed when a fallen mass candle burned it to the ground in 1583. | |||||||
11 | Rizal Park | 101-110 | |||||
In 1995, Pope John Paul II led Mass before nearly 5 million people. The crowd was so large, the event landed in the Guinness Book of World Records as the largest papal gathering in history. | |||||||
12 | San Agustin Church | 111-120 | |||||
The church, circa 1587, is the oldest catholic cathedrals in Philippines. Coincidentally, it is also one of the country's rare ancient buildings to survive the repeated bombings during World War II. |
