# | Monument | Levels | Requirement | Image | |||
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Bricks | Hats | Gems | Green Gems | ||||
1 | Pyramid of the Sun | 1-10 | |||||
A robot named Tlaloc II is credited with discovering ancient rooms under the pyramid. No word on whether the robot made excited beeping noises when it did. | |||||||
2 | Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe | 11-20 | |||||
In 1936, renowned chemist Richard Kuhn claimed that the colors of the Basilica were not from a mineral, vegetable, or animal source - or any earthly source at all. His findings were rebuked by an art expert in 2002, who declared that colors came from nothing more heavenly than clay paint. | |||||||
3 | National Museum of Anthropology | 21-30 | |||||
The day the statue of Tlaloc, the Aztec god of rain, arrived at the museum gates a torrential rain fell on Mexico City - a sign the god was pleased. It could also be called a coincidence. | |||||||
4 | Chapultepec | 31-40 | |||||
The ecology of the park is so complex, it is estimated that 100 million pesos are needed annually to maintain it - or 6 million US dollars. | |||||||
5 | Chapultepec Castle | 41-50 | |||||
The elaborate setting might look familiar to film buffs. In 1996, the castle starred in William Shakespeare's Romeo + Juliet, along with Leonardo DiCaprio and Claire Danes. | |||||||
6 | Lake Texcoco | 51-60 | |||||
The ancient Aztecs built a system of dams to control the level of the lake, but this surprisingly modern system was destroyed by Spanish invaders. To deal with flooding, the lake was drained in 1967. The result was the city's current problem - water shortages. | |||||||
7 | National Palace | 61-70 | |||||
The liberty bell that rung Mexico's independence in 1810 still chimes yearly on September 16th - with the current president repeating the historic shout of independence to the citizens below. | |||||||
8 | Great Pyramid of Tenochtitlan | 71-80 | |||||
The temple was dedicated simultaneously to the god of war and the god of rain. Each god had a shrine at the top of the pyramid with separate staircases - as presumably they didn't get along. | |||||||
9 | Mexico City Metropolitan Cathedral | 81-90 | |||||
Given that Mexico City is built over a lake, it isn't too surprising that the city is sinking. However, even parishioner prayers have not propped up the Metropolitan Cathedral's sloped floor - it is clearly tilted. | |||||||
10 | Palacio de Correos de Mexico | 91-100 | |||||
Mexico City established a separate post office in 1901. This was due in part to the volume of mail that was being handled (or mishandled) annually - nearly 130 million pieces. | |||||||
11 | Angel of Independence | 101-110 | |||||
In 1957, an earthquake rocked the golden symbol of independence off its column. An angel might have been present when it did, as miraculously no one was injured when it fell. | |||||||
12 | Zocalo | 111-120 | |||||
The central square of Mexico City is wide enough that in May of 2007, noted photographer Spencer Tunick managed to fill it with 18,000 Mexicans for a single shot. No word on the traffic jam afterwards. |
