Monuments[]
# | Monument | Levels | Requirement | Image | |||
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Bricks | Hats | Gems | Green Gems | ||||
1 | State Opera | 1-10 | |||||
Despite the beauty of the State Opera, the Estates Theatre is more renowned. It is the only surviving theater where Mozart actually performed. The theater also hosted the world premiere of Mozart's Don Giovanni in 1787 - conducted by the maestro himself. | |||||||
2 | Church of Our Lady before Tyn | 11-20 | |||||
The site houses the tomb of Tycho Brahe. The Danish astronomer and Rudolf II's consultant is said to have died of a burst bladder when he was too polite to leave the table to relieve himself. | |||||||
3 | Municipal House | 21-30 | |||||
The beautifully restored building is home to Smetana Hall, the city's largest concert venue, seating 1200 musical enthusiasts at a time. Visitors who pull themselves out of the music long enough to look up are rewarded with a stunning view of the venue's elegant art nouveau glass dome. | |||||||
4 | Josefov | 31-40 | |||||
The Jewish quarter is home to the oldest Jewish cemetery in Europe still in existence. In a possible homage to resting in peace, some of the tombstones are built to actually resemble beds. | |||||||
5 | Spanish Synagogue | 41-50 | |||||
The famed Jewish Quarter's newest synagogue was built on the site of the oldest one. Frantisek Skroup, who later composed the Czech national anthem, served as organist and choirmaster at the old temple from 1836 to 1845. He even composed some of the music played during services. | |||||||
6 | Old Town Square | 51-60 | |||||
The square's Jan Hus statue marks the 500th anniversary of the reformer's death. Although his name is now synonymous with the Hussite wars, he famously argued that no religious figure should raise a sword in the name of the Church. | |||||||
7 | Vysehrad | 61-70 | |||||
Legend has it that the ancient castle of Vyšehrad was built for a Libuše, a Czech princess who married a farmer. Despite her downscale marriage, this was the residence of the Bohemian rulers for over a century. | |||||||
8 | Petrin Observation Tower | 71-80 | |||||
The Petrin Observation Tower was built in 1891 as a mini replica of the Eiffel Tower. Visitors are invited to climb the 299 steps for an astounding view of the city. No word on what happened to the 300th step. | |||||||
9 | Prague National Theatre | 81-90 | |||||
When a tragic fire destroyed the newly opened theater in 1881, devastated citizens sprang into action. In 47 days, a million guldens were collected to rebuild - making the project a very early forerunner of current kick start campaigns. | |||||||
10 | Prague Astronomical Clock | 91-100 | |||||
The clock, first installed in 1410, shows the passage of time in more than one way - an astronomical dial reveals how the medieval world perceived the universe. | |||||||
11 | Charles Bridge | 101-110 | |||||
The bridge features a bronze statue of St. John of Nepomuk, with the reliefs below depicting how his body was thrown off the landmark in 1393. Despite this less than favorable end, touching the relief is supposed to bring luck. | |||||||
12 | Strahov Monastery | 111-120 | |||||
The main Philosophy Hall of the monastery was visited by such notaries as Admiral Horatio Nelson. More recently, the library was visited by actor Daniel Craig - it was featured as the backdrop for his Bond adventure, "Casino Royale." |
