1 | Christ the Redeemer Statue | 1-10 | 100,000 | - | - | -
The statue, completed in 1931, is hit by lightning at least twice a year. The last storm reportedly broke off the statue's right thumb - happily, no one was in "God's hands" at the time.
2 | Rio de Janeiro Botanical Garden | 11-20 | 250,000 | - | - | -

3 | Ipanema Beach | 21-30 | 340,000 | - | - | 3
The song "Girl from Ipanema" sounds slightly less romantic when you consider that the word Ipanema means "stinky lake" in Tupi.
4 | Terra Encantada | 31-40 | 370,000 | - | - | 4
The long-awaited amusement park closed down after a string of unfortunate events - including a riot, an employee strike, and a mysterious brawl amidst visiting Jiu-Jitsu fighters. No word on which ju-jitsu fighter emerged victorious.
5 | Sugarloaf Mountain | 41-50 | 420,000 | 270,000 | - | 4
The mountain is one of the largest and most popular urban rock climbing destinations in the world, attracting hordes of climbers clamoring to explore the 270 "sweet" routes.
6 | Santa Teresa | 51-60 | 460,000 | 330,000 | - | 4
The ancient cobblestone village is accessed by Rio's last streetcar - the bonde. Passengers can enjoy the thrill of a bygone age as they cling for dear life, lest they fall off and catapult into the crumbling surrounding mansions.
7 | Parque Lage | 61-70 | 560,000 | 400,000 | - | 5
The tranquil park offers the rare opportunity to drink a cappuccino while admitting monkeys and toucans. No word on how the monkeys take their coffee, however.
8 | Tijuca Forest | 71-80 | 580,000 | 470,000 | - | 4
The largest urban forest in the world belies the common myth of a steamy rain forest. The vegetation is so dense; scientists estimate the temperature is lower by 9 degrees Celsius than other parts of the city.
9 | Maracanã Stadium | 81-90 | 610,000 | 520,000 | 300,000 | 10
The stadium set a world record for soccer attendance when nearly 175,000 fans attended the 1950 World Cup - only to witness Brazil trounced by Uruguay.
10 | Escadaria Selaron | 91-100 | 680,000 | 580,000 | 400,000 | 4
Artist Jorge Selaron called is "art stairs" project a tribute to the Brazilian people - although there is evidence that they did not fully embrace his rather garish choice of bright yellow, green, and blue, the colors of the Brazilian flag.
11 | Candelaria Church | 101-110 | 720,000 | 650,000 | 460,000 | 4
During a terrible storm on a ship called the Candelaria, beleaguered sailors promised if they made it through, they'd build a church. As luck - or faith - would have it, they managed to keep their word.
12 | Teatro Municipal | 111-120 | 750,000 | 700,000 | 600,000 | 4
The eclectic theater might have been inspired by the Paris Opera, but now rarely houses opera productions. Instead, the theater mainly presents the Brazilian Symphony Orchestra - which requires less need for expensive costume changes. |
