Monuments[]
# | Monument | Levels | Requirement | Image | |||
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Bricks | Hats | Gems | Green Gems | ||||
1 | Bongeunsa Buddhist Temple | 1-10 | 100,000 | - | - | - | |
The giant fish at the temple entrance is a symbol of reaching enlightenment - without obstacles, one feels as free as a fish in a pond. No word on how they’d feel out of the water. | |||||||
2 | Namsan | 11-20 | 240,000 | - | - | - | |
Namsan’s North Seoul Tower is a popular spot for couples, who traditionally make the climb to attach locks with sweet messages – presumably “locking” lovers together forever. | |||||||
3 | Myeongdong Cathedral | 21-30 | 300,000 | - | - | 4 | |
The controversial cathedral was so important architecturally, King Gojong attended the cathedral’s cornerstone ceremony in 1892 – despite his forlorn attempt to prevent construction. | |||||||
4 | Jongmyo | 31-40 | 350,000 | - | - | 3 | |
The famous shrine has three paths. One was designated for the king, one for the crown prince, and one for the spirits. No reports of how often the spirits caused traffic jams. | |||||||
5 | Namdaemun | 41-50 | 380,000 | 280,000 | - | 4 | |
If these gates look familiar, it might be because the ancient fortress is popular as a visual riff in more than a few recent video games. | |||||||
6 | Deoksugung | 51-60 | 420,000 | 350,000 | - | 3 | |
Although considered a secondary palace, changing the guards is a first rate spectacle - utilizing 50 participants in Joseon-era soldier uniforms. | |||||||
7 | Gwanghwamun Square | 61-70 | 450,000 | 420,000 | - | 4 | |
Despite the square’s famous 12.23 Fountain moniker, it has nothing to do with December 23rd. The name was bestowed in honor of Admiral Soun-Sing’s 23 victories and command of 12 battle ships. | |||||||
8 | Bosingak | 71-80 | 500,000 | 490,000 | - | 6 | |
The 14th century bell is rung only at midnight on New Year’s Eve – attracting such a massive crowd that subway trains don’t stop at Jonggak Station that night. | |||||||
9 | Heunginjimun | 81-90 | 540,000 | 530,000 | 250,000 | 3 | |
The Great Eastern Gate is not only an ancient monument, it’s also home to the city’s largest and most fashionable clothing market. The convenient location is less than an hour from the airport – making it possible to double the weight of your luggage upon arrival. | |||||||
10 | Changgyeongung Palace | 91-100 | 580,000 | 580,000 | 350,000 | 4 | |
The center of the palace’s pool features a stone turtle below the water. Turtles were not only lucky, but also said to forecast the future - perhaps because they were a bit slow getting there. | |||||||
11 | Gyeongbokgung | 101-110 | 630,000 | 640,000 | 400,000 | 4 | |
After a devastating fire, all 7,700 rooms of this ancient palace were painstakingly restored to their ancient glory. No word, however, on how long it took to make up all the beds in the guest rooms again. | |||||||
12 | Bukhansan National Park | 111-120 | 660,000 | 680,000 | 620,000 | 4 | |
This national park gives new meaning to the term “urban adventure.” A subway ride brings you to the base of a hike up a 2,000 feet tall granite peak - reputed to be not for the faint of heart. |
