Monuments[]
# | Monument | Levels | Requirement | Image | |||
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Bricks | Hats | Gems | Green Gems | ||||
1 | Jade Buddha Temple | 1-10 | 90,000 | - | - | - | |
It is said to be lucky to burn joss sticks at the temple on lunar New Year’s Day. The horde of eager visitors resulted in an entrance charge as high as US$200 to control admission - and a boon for local charities. | |||||||
2 | Waibaidu Bridge | 11-20 | 230,000 | - | - | - | |
Legend has it that a marriage will be blessed with one hundred years of happiness if the wedding photos are snapped at this century-old bridge. No word on confirmation from any long-married couples. | |||||||
3 | Oriental Pearl Tower | 21-30 | 270,000 | - | - | 4 | |
Shanghai’s second tallest building features a glass floor tower popular for picture-taking – if you don't mind looking down. | |||||||
4 | Shimao International Plaza | 31-40 | 320,000 | - | - | 4 | |
Visitors to the luxurious 60 floor skyscraper can enjoy not only one of the city’s poshest hotels, but also ten floors of shopping malls – eliminating the need to ever leave the building. | |||||||
5 | Shanghai Zoo | 41-50 | 360,000 | 270,000 | - | 2 | |
In 2014, a zoo visitor dropped a large purse into the tiger enclosure. A tiger promptly carried it off, presumably chewing through cash, clothing, and thousands in loan receipts. | |||||||
6 | Yu Garden | 51-60 | 400,000 | 320,000 | - | 3 | |
The Yuan Garden’s ten foot tall Exquisite Jade Rock has 72 natural holes. Legend has it that if you pour water into the top of the rock, it will flow out magically from every opening. The mystery might never be solved, however - the garden frowns on anyone getting too close to the ancient relic. | |||||||
7 | Happy Valley Shanghai | 61-70 | 430,000 | 380,000 | - | 4 | |
The amusement park features China’s first wooden roller-coaster - the Fire Ball. It rockets to 55 miles an hour, with the sound of creaking wood possibly adding an extra element of terror. | |||||||
8 | Longhua Temple | 71-80 | 460,000 | 440,000 | - | 2 | |
The ancient Buddhist site made a modern splash with an uncredited cameo appearance in Steven Spielberg’s Empire of the Sun. | |||||||
9 | Expo Axis | 81-90 | 490,000 | 470,000 | 260,000 | 7 | |
The famous membrane entrance of the Shanghai Expo 2010 now shelters a new shopping mall and restaurant complex, although without the Expo’s popular green enhancements: Edible cutlery and low carbon beer. | |||||||
10 | Shanghai Science and Technology Museum | 91-100 | 520,000 | 500,000 | 330,000 | 10 | |
A favorite exhibit at the museum offers children the chance to ride a bicycle across a tightrope suspended in mid-air. Hopefully, it avoided another popular site - a giant, floating water tap. | |||||||
11 | Jin Mao Tower | 101-110 | 550,000 | 530,000 | 380,000 | 7 | |
The Tower’s Grand Hyatt Hotel laundry chute runs from the 88th floor down to the basement. The chute’s built in buffers are designed to slow the deadly speed of descending sheets and towels. | |||||||
12 | Shanghai Ocean Aquarium | 111-120 | 580,000 | 560,000 | 480,000 | 6 | |
One of the world’s largest aquariums is home to an Oranda goldfish named Bruce, in honor of the late film star Bruce Lee. No word on whether the fish has an equally swift kick. |
